Mark Scrivener Poetry Blog no 34 City Morning

CITY MORNING

We tend to live by habit and in some ways modern life tends to encourage this, turning life into a "machine". Yet every day is in some ways a chance for a new beginning as many have remarked, for example, the great classical Indian playwright Kalidasa in his famous verses "Look to this Day." These thoughts form the background to this short poem.

CITY MORNING

Earth’s journeyed through the turn of night;

The sun’s upon our sky.

Day slips the city into gear.

The morning immigration’s here.

Clocks’ shrill awakening;

The dreaming eyes are opening

And looking with day-sight,

And seeing in the given light.

People wake and dress and eat:

Day-starting rituals, habit-neat.

And car-lines fill road patterns,

And carriages track metal trails.

Clocks mark work-start. Commuters yawn.

Each heart moves past another dawn.
