Mark Scrivener Poetry Blog No 32 Iris

IRIS

The Greek goddess of the rainbow is also a word used for the part of the eye that controls the diameter of the pupil. When when experience colour we find that the different hues speak to our feelings in different ways e.g. red feels energetic and "advancing" towards you, while blue seems more relaxing and taking you "outward". Is the experience of colour purely "subjective" as normally claimed by science or is the boundary between us and the universe more reciprocal- do we live in it with our consciousness and does it live in our awareness?

IRIS

This messenger of heaven’s light
reflects wide rays as shining bow;
and arcs soul spectrum of the sight,
from dark to light: day-colour flow:

band of red’s creative flame,
warm, enfolding orange glow,
yellow’s keen and brilliant beam,
green’s heart balm like lasting calm,
sky-blue’s far-illumined noon,
indigo’s deep-silent might,
violet’s dark-soothing night.

As shimmering in clearing sky
lives Iris, rainbow-bearing sight.
The light lives in the eye;
the eye lives in the light.
