Mark Scrivener Poetry Blog No 96 Nasturtiums in the Sun

NASTURTIUMS IN THE SUN

What use is poetry? Poetry has no use. Technology can be used to make life easier and more convenient and open new possibilities for us. Art, however, is not useful, It does not help us with how we live life, Rather art helps us with why we live. Sometimes just experiencing a simple thing more fully gives us reasons to live. And sometimes poetry can help inspire us to have such moments by "capturing" them to some extent in that most difficult medium- words.

NASTURTIUMS IN THE SUN

Autumn morning sunlight lights

leaves and flowers of tumble-growing

nasturtiums by veranda side.

Shifting to air's slightest flowing,

rounded leaves, so broad and bright,

veined from centre like green suns,

sparkle with white drops from night's

dew-fall, bright as scattered gems.

From the greenness flowers poke

in untidy celebration ,

luminous with sunshine, glowing

yellow, orange, orange-red,

burning notes to sing to sight-

kisses from the heart of light.
